SITHI @ BAXTER

This popular life-skills theatre programme for teenagers, a Baxter Theatre Centre initiative, has proved a great success with more than two thousand teenagers from all over the Cape Peninsula who have benefited from the programme since it first started twelve years ago.
All interested young enthusiasts between the ages of 14 and 18 are invited to apply for the first semester of 2012, which runs from March to June.
Sithi, a Xhosa word meaning "it's us" or "we're here", is aimed at teaching young people life-skills through the medium of theatre. They learn to hone personal skills such as confidence, assertiveness, self-assuredness, focus, literacy and communication competencies, which they can use throughout their lives. Teamwork, conflict resolution and research also contribute to the development of the youngsters, with parents and teachers in the past commenting on how it has positively impacted on their academic achievements.
The course will run every Friday thereafter at the Baxter Theatre Centre from 3.30 to 5.30 pm. The cost of attending the programme is R300 per semester and is payable in advance.

In 2012 we will be implementing assessment classes for the new applicants. During these two classes, which take place on 17 and 25 February, all three facilitators will be involved in assessing whether the new applicants are ready to be part of Sithi@baxter.
In 2011 it became clear that, although some teenagers would love to take part in the programme, they sometimes lack the ability to co-operate within a group environment, which is vital in Sithi@baxter. During these two classes group and individual work will be encouraged. This will also give the facilitators a change to get to know the prospective students.
Parents/ Guardians of these new applicants will be contacted no later than 29 February to be informed on whether or not their application was successful.
