Zabalaza Theatre Festival 2018

The 2018 Zabalaza Festival starts with a series of mini-festivals on the weekends of 3 and 4 February and 10 and 11 February. These festivals will be held in various areas in and around the Western Cape. This year there are several exciting additions to the 2018 programme.

Curated and directed by acclaimed actor and director, Mdu Kweyama, the Festival opens on 9 March, followed by a Family Carnival Weekend on 10 and 11 March. This will include puppetry, story-telling, poetry, a play area for kids with a jumping castle and face painting, among other things, perfect for the entire family to enjoy. Performances by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports programme finalists from the Cape Winelands and the Eden District will be showcased.

The Festival has created a new opportunity for three young directors to bring ground-breaking work to the line-up and is called the Platform for Special Talent. This project emerged out of the need to bridge the gap between new theatre makers and established theatre makers by giving them opportunities within a professional theatre space.

A final addition to the 2018 programme is Game Changers which will include participants from schools all over the Overberg, Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and Eden District regions. The Festival will come to a close with the awards ceremony on 17 March.

Experience the making of brand new, young theatre at the 2018 Zabalaza Festival.
