Dikgaruru (disrupting the unrest), starring Calvin Seretle wa Ratladi, directed by Sopotela, has just returned from a season where it premiered at the Artspiel Festival in Munich, Germany to three standing ovations at every performance.

“Our bodies know – (dis)abled or not
– there’s a presence of the past in our bodies with hope to heal the future”

It is a meditative, personal reflection using narrative elements from visions, dreams and historical rituals, as the performer explores aspects of life with and within a body considered to be disabled. The piece perceives the body as a political issue that needs to be resolved. In collaboration with the director Ratladi explores psyche, longing and repression in the search for a utopia beyond the physical.

ISamkelo is written and performed by Chuma Sopotela, directed by Calvin Seretle wa Ratladi. This work forms part of her Advanced Diploma Studies at the Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies. Sopotela is he 2018 National Arts Festival Artist of the Year for Performance Art. She has won many theare awards and has been seen in productions such Rock to the Core and Karoo Moose.

iSamkelo is based on the true story which took place earlier this year, about two children from Diepsloot in Soweto, who were left at home without adult supervision. The two youngest, while playing with matches, accidently set the house alight and the fire destroyed everything.

The Fifth time was night. I always imagine the others floating on burning buildings. Shocked. Electrified. She was hungry when she had them. Now they are searching for the next time they’ll be born.
