Sainthood

Sainthood is a theatrical play that was made in 2017 at the University of Cape Town from a collection of true stories from interviews conducted by the director and playwright, Tiisetso Mashifane wa Noni. The interviews were centred around the masculine culture cultivated in male dominated spaces such as unisex schools.

From there, the interviews and articles were amalgamated into a five person play called ‘ A Tragic Conversation on the Persistence of Sainthood’  that took these interviews and fictionalised them into the lives of five fictional adolescent boys at a fictional elite South African all-boys school as they come to terms with their identity, sexuality, race and academics within a brotherly culture that is not as saintly as it seems. At the 2018 National Arts Festival, Sainthood was awarded a 2018 Standard Bank Ovation Award.
