Celebrating 15 years of dance in the Western Cape, the annual Baxter Dance Festival is now calling for applications for the 2019 festival

This year the Baxter Dance Festival celebrates 15 years of showcasing the best of dance in the Western Cape and the organisers are now calling for applications from choreographers, independent dance-makers, dance studios, schools, companies and groups.

To mark this milestone, an exciting, newly imagined format and vision is planned to ensure a fresh and vibrant programme. The festival will take place from 26 September to 5 October 2019.

The closing date for applications is 5pm, on Friday, 31 May and interested dance-makers and choreographers are urged to get their detailed applications in as early as possible.

Since its inception Cape Town’s premier dance platform has been committed to promoting all genres of dance in the Western Cape. “Our festival is now grown up,” says Artistic Director, Nicolette Moses, “and we have to heed this momentous occasion which is why we have decided to bring some innovative and new configurations to the festival. We look forward to vibrant programme with top quality work from dance-makers and choreographers.”

The Main Programme will include works by established professional choreographers and companies and will run for the entire festival. The Off-Main Programme, on Saturday, 28 September, will showcase the work by up-and-coming choreographers (including student work), and the Fringe Programme on Saturday, 5 October, will include work by youth groups, dance schools, school groups, traditional dance groups and others.

Despite its limited funding, the Baxter Dance Festival have always, and will continue, to provide a platform which creates opportunities for emerging and established dance companies and choreographers to present their work, while nurturing and promoting the distinct dance talent in the province. It creates the ideal environment to experience and see work by established professionals, as well as emerging dance practitioners. Furthermore, it the perfect platform for dance lovers and the public to experience the diversity and broad scope of talent on offer in the province.

The Baxter Theatre Centre provides a comprehensive production package to participants which includes lighting, sound, technical assistance, publicity, box office facilities, printed programmes and pre-show rehearsal arrangements, making it an efficient experience for contributing dance groups and companies.

With this new format for the festival’s 15-year celebration, it is essential that a comprehensive proposal accompanies each application. Only detailed and fully completed applications will be considered. Thereafter, the selection panel will shortlist entrants who will be required to present a two-minute extract of the new choreography.

To date, well over 500 local choreographers have showcased their work at the festival, featuring some of the finest local choreographers and many have continued to make their mark in the world of dance, both in South Africa and abroad.

The festival has seen over 5000 dancers from over 400 studios, dance schools, projects and professional companies from across the Western Cape, presenting an array of dance styles and genres including contemporary, classical, African, modern and Spanish.
