YEONG MEE CHOI (piano)

Yeong Mee Choi, renowned for her intelligent and lyric playing, won first prize at both the entrance and graduate examinations at Keimyung University. She furthered her studies at the Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg, specializing in solo piano and lieder accompaniment, and has performed innumerable solo concerts, ensemble concerts, duets and accompaniments in Europe and Korea and at various international contemporary music festivals.

In residence at the University of the Free State, where they also teach and lead the string sections of the Free State Symphony Orchestra, the members of the famous Odeion String Quartet are all musicians of national reputation and international experience: Denise Sutton, a member of the Scottish and English Chamber orchestras, and former concertmaster of the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra in Pretoria, among others; Sharon de Kock, a former first violinist in the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica; Jeanne-Louise Moolman, former principal violist of the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa; and cellist Anmari van der Westhuizen, whose eight-year residence in Europe saw her perform extensively there as a soloist and chamber musician and whose CD recordings have been critically acclaimed.

Russian pianist Katya Apekisheva, described in Gramophone magazine as “a profoundly gifted artist” and named the London Philharmonic Orchestra's 'Soloist of the Year', tours South Africa for the first time in 2010. A distinguished product of the Gnessin School for exceptionally gifted children, the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and the Royal College of Music in London, Katya is also a noted chamber musician. Her CD recording of solo piano music by Grieg received both Editor's and Critics' Choice Awards in 2008 editions of Gramophone, also garnering the 'Rising Star' award in International Piano Magazine.

As a child prodigy Chun Wang was the winner of numerous prizes in The People's Republic of China, but became the object of international interest when at the age of fourteen he was awarded Third Prize at the 1st Franz Liszt International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Weimar, Germany. This early success was followed by winning the 2006 Villa-Lobos International in Brazil and that same year becoming only the second Chinese pianist to reach the finals in the prestigious Hamamatsu International in Japan; these remarkable achievements were then capped by Second Prize at the 10th Rencontre Internationale des Jeunes Pianistes in Paris and Third Prize at the 11th Vodacom UNISA International Piano Competition (2008) where he was also awarded the Marc Raubenheimer Memorial Prize.

This competition recognises a student in each of two categories, Classical and Jazz, and is open to all students between the ages of 18 and 28. Participants are invited to send in a recording of their work, which is judged. A selection of the recordings is featured on Fine Music Radio 101.3 prior to the public concert where the three finalists in each category compete for the prizes.

FREE CONCERTS

Members of the public are welcome to attend the weekly performers' classes and lunchtime concerts which take place every Wednesday at 14:00 and Thursday at 13:00 respectively during the academic term. Admission is free, and the concerts fit neatly into 40 minutes.
