Dada Masilo's
CARMEN

5–10 October (Theatre)
The 25 year-old trailblazer Dada Masilo, recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance in 2008, has made a name for herself both as a dancer and as a choreographer in recent years. Her Romeo and Juliet, based closely on Shakespeare's text, but reflecting the youth of the title characters in her use of Bach and Vivaldi, performed by Vanessa Mae and Nigel Kennedy, drew large critical and audience support.
Carmen, which dazzled audiences at the 2009 National Arts and Joburg Arts Alive Festivals, posed an even bigger challenge. Masilo says: 'I began with the idea of unravelling Carmen the woman – to search beneath the surface presented in the ballets and operas – to find the vulnerability beneath the cold, heartless exterior. In the process of research, there was so much to unravel: I searched for Bizet and found Shchedrin, I discovered many existing narratives. Ultimately, I have created a narrative which allows me and the dancers to do what we love most – to dance.'
For music, she has chosen Rodion Shchedrin's Carmen Suite - Ballet Suite for strings and percussion based on themes from Carmen by George Bizet, Bizet's Carmen Suites, Maria Callas singing the 'Habanera', and two sections of Arvo Pärt's Lamentate.

It has been brought back by public demand after its great success in 2008 when featured during a women's festival with the theme Women and Disability.

DANCE UCT 2010
4–6 November (Theatre)
The first half of Dance UCT 2010, the School’s annual showcase of its students and of dance, centres around the Afro-contemporary genre. Stravinsky’s compelling score forms the backdrop to an exploration of ritual, tradition and notions of modernity. Choreographed by Maxwell Xolani Rani, pioneer of Intsika technique, and Jamila Rodrigues, studying for a Master's in Choreography, the work challenges normative stereotypes of African dance and peoples of the African continent.
The second half of the programme focuses on an eclectic mix of dance languages in an adaptation of Carmen.
